The application of traditional Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is rooted in the principles of efficiency, patience, and control. It is a combat sport and self-defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. However, those same principles also hold the key to success in all aspects of one’s life.
The art was derived from the Japanese art of Kodokan Judo in the early 20th century by the Gracie family in Brazil. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves and defeat a bigger, stronger opponent with the proper use of leverage and technique – most notably by the application and proper use of joint locks and chokes to render the opponent helpless.
The Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu curriculum was added to Hoy’s Martial Arts Academy in the summer of 2011. While we do train and coach many students for competition matches, our heart and thus our focus is on the classic self-defense application rather than the more contrived art used in many sporting events. Not only is this art highly effective to combat a variety of situations that one may experience at some point in their lives, it is also a great way to relieve stress, get in amazing shape, and get on track with a healthy lifestyle that will make you look and feel better than ever!
Jiu-Jitsu came to international prominence in the martial arts community in the early 1990s, when Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert Royce Gracie won the first, second, and fourth Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), which were single elimination martial arts tournaments in their infancy. Royce often fought against larger opponents who were practicing other styles of combat, including Boxing, Shoot-fighting, Muay Thai, Karate, Wrestling, and Tae Kwon Do.
It has since become a staple art for many Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters, and Royce is largely credited for bringing widespread attention to the importance of Ground Fighting. Sport BJJ tournaments continue to grow in popularity worldwide, and have given rise to no-gi Submission Grappling tournaments, such as the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship.
Our Commitment to
the “Gentle Art”
Our instructors are always researching, learning, and practicing ways to advance the art beyond chokes and arm bars. Every student that steps out on the mat at Hoy’s Martial Arts Academy comes equipped with their own set of trials, tribulations, history, wins and losses, successes and defeats; but the one thing we all share is the desire to be just a little bit better than we were the day before. Over time, those little “wins” add up to milestones and major accomplishments.
Those accomplishments are forever life-changing, and we’re here to help you every step of the way. With every tap and every “AH-HA!” moment in your jiu-jitsu journey, we all get to learn a little something we didn’t know the day before. Because of that, we all become a little bit better than we were yesterday!
At Hoy’s Martial Arts Academy, located in Broadview Heights, just minutes from the Route 77 / Wallings Rd. exit, you get the opportunity to train with best BJJ instructors Cleveland has to offer.
Our Gracie/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu curriculum was added to our school in the summer of 2011 and has become an incredibly popular art, known for its grappling and ground fighting, and how it relates to not only self defense, but to the sports arena as well. Jiu jitsu is not only a highly effective combat art that focus on self-defense over any sport application, but it is also a great way to relieve stress, get in amazing shape, and get on track with a healthy lifestyle that will make you look and feel better than ever!
You may be asking yourself, “is jiu-jitsu right for me?” Well, we can emphatically answer that with a YES! Jiu-Jitsu, especially the line of Gracie BJJ, can be studied by anyone and everyone — regardless of age or pre-existing condition. It’s one of the few martial arts where the only limitation is the one you impose on yourself. We’re getting better everyday … let’s us show you how!
Great spot for both adult & kids classes! My son takes kids classes and loves going, he’s picked up self defense instruction, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and basic striking. Kids classes are very safe and efficiently run. I take the adult Brazilian jiu jitsu classes and enjoy the laid back and informative atmosphere. The instructors are great guys who are always willing to answer questions and offer advice on technique.
Hoy’s Martial Arts Academy has helped me find a level of confidence and ability I didn’t know I had.
After leaving the Washington D.C. area and training Jiu Jitsu at the Pedro Sauer Academy, I was referred to HOY’S Martial Arts Academy and found the level of training to be outstanding. My Son and Daughter also attend Chris Hoy’s Academy and love the individual attention and quality instruction from Chris and Angelo Vega, one of the head instructors. They really make you feel like part of the family. The best Jiu Jitsu Academy in the area in my opinion.
